The Per Capita Plastic Packaging Waste Generation in The EU

.From the development of takeout and online shopping, the popularity of packaging is becoming wider and wider.


According to data released by Eurostat, each resident in the EU produced an average of 188.7 kilograms of packaging waste in 2021, an increase of 10.8 kilograms compared with 2020 and an increase of nearly 32 kilograms compared with 2011. This is the largest increase in the past 10 years. In 2021, the EU generated a total of 84 million tons of packaging waste, of which 40.3% was paper and cartons. Plastic accounts for 19.0%, wood 17.1%, glass 18.5%, and metal 4.9%.

 In 2021, each inhabitant living in the EU generated 35.9 kilograms of plastic packaging waste, of which 14.2 kilograms were recycled. Compared with 2020, the annual recycling rate per person increased by 1.4 kilograms, a growth rate of 4.0%, and the recycling amount per person increased by 1.2 kilograms, a growth rate of 9.5%. Compared with 2011, plastic packaging waste increased by 26.7% per capita (7.6 kg per capita), and recycling increased by 38.1% (3.9 kg per capita)


Under new rules that will be implemented in 2020, the plastic packaging recycling rate increased from 37.6% in 2020 to 41.1% in 2021.

 

In 2021, the plastic packaging recycling rate increased by 39.7%. Slovenia, Belgium and the Netherlands (the top three countries in the chart use 2020 data) recycle half or almost half of their plastic packaging waste, followed by Germany and Italy. In comparison, less than 25% of plastic packaging waste is recycled in Malta, France and Sweden.


The EU's waste plastic exports will be 1.038 million tons in 2022 and 1.135 million tons in 2021. Under this situation, energy conservation and emission reduction of packaging supplies is imperative. Reducing packaging waste is an imperative responsibility of every operator. To reduce packaging waste and improve the recycling rate of packaging items, environmentally friendly packaging is imperative.
